Performance FAQs
How quickly do Switchable products change state?
In a split-second (45 milliseconds).
Is there a Switchable Smart Blackout product?
No, we do not have a blackout product. When powered off, our switchable products transmit more than 60% of visible light, while providing complete privacy.
Do Switchable products provide UV protection?
Yes, our switchable products block up to 98% of UV light in both on and off states.
Can I see through the glass when it is off?
No, when it is turned off switchable products provide full privacy (in both directions). The light is not completely blocked and subtle shadows / silhouettes may be seen on the glass depending on the lighting strength and direction.
Is Smart Privacy Glass as optically clear as normal glass? How can I optimise clarity?
No, when the Switchable technology is powered on (transparent) it is not as optically clear as standard clear glass. This is due to what we call an “off-axis haze” – If you look at the powered-on PDLC from an acute angle you can see more of the crystal, resulting in a slight haze.
Can Switchable be clear when off as opposed to on?
No, this is not possible. When there is no power applied to the PDLC technology, it becomes frosted; when you turn on the power, it becomes transparent.
Is Smart Film durable and scratch resistant?
Switchable Smart Film is durable and has a PET outer layer. Although it is durable it can still be scratched by abrasive materials, sharp objects and incorrect cleaning methods.
Does Smart Glass / Film affect sound transmission?
Yes, we can manufacture Switchable Glass using acoustic-rated glass. If you give us an idea of the dB rating required for your project we can put together a solution. Contact our team for further information.
Does Smart Glass / Film reduce light transmission?
Yes, our Smart Technology does reduce light transmission along with blocking a large amount of glare, stopping the sun from directly beaming into your rooms!
How do Switchable products perform in extreme temperatures?
Switchable products have an operating temperature of -20°C to +70°C, meaning they can withstand rather extreme temperatures. When operating at these extremities, there may be a slight increase in switching time.
Can Smart Privacy Glass improve security?
Of course! By simply adding the ability to obscure the view through your window it instantly gives you peace of mind that no one can visually see into your space. Not only is this a visible deterrent but also physical – by laminating our PDLC technology there is an extra layer of robustness. If we also combine this with acoustic or fire rated glazing there is even more protection to secure your property.
